Founded in 1062, Marrakech was once the capital of an empire which stretched from Toledo to Senegal. Called the ?Pink City? because of the colour of the local earth used in its construction, it is a city of labyrinthine alleyways, secluded palaces, museums, mosques and markets. The city?s gardens are still supplied with water from 11th century underground irrigation canals. The Djemmaa-el-fna (Place of the Dead), the city square, comes alive after nightfall; thronged with dancer, fortune-tellers, musicians, acrobats, storytellers and snake charmers, it is an exciting and occasionally bewildering place ? an exotic spectacle that is striking and endlessly surprising. Koutoubia, the 12th century minaret, is as tall as the towers of Nôtre Dame and dominates the Marrakech skyline. The Ben Youssef Medersa, with its mosaics, marbles and carved woodwork, is the largest theological site in the Mahgreb. Other interesting places to see are the sumptuous Bahia Palace; the beautiful Saadian Tombs housing the remains of rulers of the Saadian Dynastry; the Menara and Aquedal gardens and the famed camel market. Overnight in Marrakech.

Just go through a gate into the Medina and you will find yourself in another world altogether: the magical and mysterious would of the Orient unfolds its charms for the visitor. The Andalous Mosque, founded in 859, is attractive because of its magnificent worked cedar gate and because of the ancient wooden pulpit dating from 980, a minor marvel. In Seffarine Square the manufacturers of copper ware beat pieces of metal which, through the force of patience, will eventually become enormous pots. The inhabitants of the quarter do not seem very put out at the noise of the metal beating, and actually find time to sit down close to the craftsmen and chat for a while. The Attarine Medersa, built in the fourteenth century by Sultan Abou Said, was initially designed to house students who had classes in the Karaouiyine Mosque. This is surely the most beautiful medersa in Fes. Its proportions and decorations making it a jewel of Merinide art. The great tanning work affords a marvellous spectacle. Small round or square cubes cut into the floor are filled different colours.
