The first and most significant thing to consider about London is its size - it's enormous. The country's capital, roughly forty miles from the coast, covers 625 square miles, has 33 local authorities, 5 main airports, 7 mainline stations and 13 underground tube lines. To fully appreciate the size of the city, consider this; if London was a country, it's population and economy would make it the sixth largest in Europe.
The capital is divided north and south by the River Thames, London's first highway, which brought the trade and commerce that established London as a city. Apart from the river, the manner in which London is divided is fairly ill-defined. There are three central areas bordered roughly by the Circle Line underground; the West End - consisting mainly of Westminster, Covent Garden, Soho, Kensington and Knightsbridge; the East End - London's 'cockney' area; and the business sector of the 'square mile'.
