Montreal is the only French-speaking metropolis in North America and is the second largest French-speaking city in the world. However, you will hear many languages spoken here, which is a reflection on the cultural aspect of the Canadian city. Montreal has been named one of the world's most livable cities and this is probably due to its relaxed atmosphere and laid-back attitude to life.
There is a lot to see here - churches, cathedrals, castles, museums and wildlife. The centerpiece of Montreal is its namesake - Mont Royal. At the foot of Mont Royal you will find downtown Montreal. Montreal is Quebec's most important financial center and in the shiny skyscrapers of downtown, you will find young entrepreneurs eager to take on the business world.
The city is home to 4 universities and many more junior colleges so there are always an abundance of students around who add an air of joie de vivre to the streets. There are no good and bad times to visit Montreal, but the weather is more reliable during July and August. Peak season is mid-June to mid-September. Although quieter during spring and autumn, many attractions may be closed.
